Carbon Offsetting Encouragement Policy

The Policy

As a socially responsible tertiary education institution committed to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, The Chinese University of Hong Kong encourages all staff members to offset carbon emissions from their air travel by buying carbon offsets to support projects that reduce carbon emissions in other ways.

Fly green with carbon offsets

CUHK is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.  As part of the University’s carbon neutral strategies, we have introduced the Carbon Offsetting Encouragement Policy which aims to raise university members’ awareness of offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions from their air travel.

The adoption of the Carbon Offsetting Encouragement Policy demonstrates CUHK’s determination, as co-host of SDSN Hong Kong, to pursue compliance with the following SDGs:

Your participation

Participating CUHK staff members can make purchases from carbon offsetting programmes of their choice through their own means or, subject to the budget holder/unit head’s prior approval, private funding sources without any restricted funding purpose (see FAQ for details).

Record your carbon offsets via this e-form.

Incentives

To encourage more staff and their offices to support carbon offsetting, we are pleased to announce the following measures in 2024:

  1. Participating offices will be rewarded with additional points in the Green Office Programme (please refer to ‘AE2 Reducing carbon emissions from transportation’ in the checklist).
  2. Staff members who successfully record their purchase of carbon offset for their flights through the e-form between 1 March and 31 December 2024 will receive an e-certificate and have a chance to win an Airport Express roundtrip ticket e-coupon (10 sets in total).
