原產澳州，主要分佈於沼澤，靠海的河口， 也見於海岸的沙壤。樹皮宿存，深褐紅色，厚而疏鬆，有不規則斜裂深溝，能儲存大量水分，枝條雖較脆弱，但根系強固，甚少倒木，能保護水土。 花含豐富花蜜，可飼養蜜蜂。大葉桉葉，就是可愛的澳洲樹熊所選吃的尤加利葉，人們還利用大葉桉的葉來提煉香油，也可供藥用，有祛風鎮痛之用。樹幹挺拔優美可長成高大喬木達二十米，與同科大樹檸檬桉, 紅膠木為三種較常見的行道樹。

Native to Austratlia, the Swamp Mahogany is mainly distributed around swamps, deltas opening to the sea, as well as coastal sand dunes.  Irregular diagonal cracks are seen on the thick and porous fibrous dark reddish bark, which is capable of storing abundant water.  Though having fragile branches, the root system is strong and holds soil well together.  Seldom do we see Swamp Mahogany fall.  Its flowers have rich nectar glands that can feed bees.  Fruits are small woody cup-shaped capsules that grow in clusters.  The leaves, deeply lobed elliptic, waxy in texture, give out an invigorating smell of eucalyptus oil when rubbed.  While these are the leaves Australian Koalas feed on, they are also used by humans to extract medical essence oil to repel wind and relieve pain.  The neat-looking tree trunk can grow up to 20 meters tall.  Together with the Lemon-scented Gum and the Brisbane Box, they are the three most common pavement trees.
