常綠喬木,原產於印度,隋唐時傳入中國。菠蘿蜜為熱帶果樹,約有三十餘品種。雌雄同株異花,夏冬開花二次,成熟果實由綠色轉成褐黃色,發出香味即可採收,果實多著生於樹幹或枝幹,果肉黃色味香甜,營養豐富,含維生素、蛋白質、脂肪、醣類、鐵、鈣等營養素,它是世界上最大的水果,每個可重達數十斤。波羅蜜的種子狀似鵝卵石,光潔而有石頭樣花紋,質硬如木,生食有毒,熟食味如花生或板栗。波羅蜜木材常用來製造南洋各地的樂器。 The Jackfruit is a tropical evergreen Moraceae native to India and introduced into China during the Sui and Tang dynasty. There are more than 30 variations in this species. Monecious flowers and are borne both in summer and winter. Ripe fruits turn from green to brownish yellow, harvestable once sweet scent is felt. They mostly grow on the trunk or on the main branches. The flesh is yellow and exceptionally sweet, rich in vitamins, proteins, fat, carbohydrates, and iron and calcium nutrients. As the biggest fruit in the world, each of them can weigh up to tens of catties. Seeds, hard as wood, smooth as pebbles and patterned as marbles, are poisonous when eaten raw. Cooked seeds however taste like peanuts and chestnuts. Leaves are elliptic, thick and leathery; new leaves generally pinnatifid. Wood of Jackfruit is often made into musical instruments in various countries across the Southern Sea. |
